September Opening information

Taken from the September Press release

Our dedicated volunteer staff are working frantically to upgrade our new facilities on Chain Caul Rd, Riversway. This month we will become Preston’s newest visitor attraction, providing a half-day leisure and tourist experience. This is the first phase of our incremental opening and marks the culmination of over five years hard work.

After the brief formal opening at 1100 on Saturday 17th September we will be running frequent passenger trains from our new Riversway Station, using a steam engine at one end of the train and a diesel loco at the other end. Our railway forms a picturesque route through shrubbery and greenery less than two miles from the City centre. When the train crosses the Marina Bridge along Navigation Way there are excellent views across the Marina, highlighting the City skyline, reverse view is over River Ribble.

This will be the first public opportunity to travel the full length of our railway which has recently been extended to a point just before Strand Road. The round trip of over three miles takes around 40 minutes. We have been a fully operational freight railway since late 2004 and are currently handling three inbound bitumen trains each week so  it should be possible, traffic permitting, to see some of TotalFinaElf’s bitumen tankers in our sidings on the day of your visit.

The well stocked Buffet and Retail facilities are open all day. The first phase of our Large Museum Exhibits will be in place and we are providing a range of wall mounted smaller exhibits that we invite you to touch and feel.

The site is open from 11.00 to 1700 each day and also on following weekend of 24th and 25th September. Admission charges are £4.50 for adults, £3 for all concessions with a Family ticket (two adults and two children) at £12.50. There is free car parking on site and in surrounding area.

You will ride in our heritage carriages repainted by hand in their original maroon livery, hauled by a restored steam & diesel locomotives. Come and see progress in action as we continue to develop our facilities. Now that we are open we have vacancies in all, yes all, departments – from train staff to catering and from Museum to workshops. Your skills can be put to practical use in our community facilities, so why not come and join us? We are here seven days per week.
