D2870

Builder Works No. Year Status Owner
Yorkshire Engine Co. 2677 1960 Awaiting Repair RSR

This locomotive was built by the Yorkshire Engine Co to works no 2677 in 1960.  It is powered by a Rolls Royce C6NFL diesel engine developing 179 hp at 1800rpm, giving a maximum tractive effort of 15,000lb.  The transmission is hydraulic, via a Rolls-Royce 3 stage torque converter and a Yorkshire Engine Co. axle hung double reduction final drive with reversing mechanism.  The driving wheel diameter is 3' 6" and the weight is 28 Tons.

Formerly numberd DH1, it used to work at the St Helens glass works of Pilkington Brothers Ltd, who generously donated the locomotive to Steamport, arriving in November 1982.  The diesel is similar to the now defunct BR Class 02, except for not having vacuum brake equipment and other minor details.  It has thus been restored in BR livery as D2870, the next one in the series.

The loco arrived in Preston on 30th March 1999, and D2870 is currently receiving attention to the clutch mechanism.  Parts are being sourced, but due to the availability of other locomotives, is a low priority task.
